New role for artists in the modern era

So many innovations and scientific discoveries were revealed to the public at the and of the 19th century that it is hard to pick the main cause for modernism in art. It would be foolish to assume that art and artists would remain the same when the whole world jumped into modernity. However, while looking at all new coming art styles one can get the idea that it was hard for artists as well; and they did not. Instead, artists were given the opportunity to chose inspirational idea from the outside world and express it.

Realists for example in their attempt of cutting off emotions and focusing on execution favored ideas of industrialization. They also suddenly showed interested in working class and genre scenes. Pre-Raphaelists looked at the past for inspiration and spirituality. Most probably they found fast changing world scary and cold and expressed their melancholy through their work. Impressionists were scared of the future too, so they decided to live in the moment. Through their work impressionists were trying to catch this fast changing rhythm getting fixated on the time, light, and color. Globalization exposed artists to foreign culture and brought up the orientalism to European art with completely different way to experience space and colors. Many art styles started exiting competition with photography. Post impressionists showed pure emotions of the certain moment and Symbolists rejected realism at all. Art Nouveau artists adapted natural motive to modern world. What combines all the art styles of that time is that they all had something to say to the world. The spirit of rebellion and revolution is shown very strongly and passionately.

I personally would compare high renaissance masters with diligent students and modernist artists with rebellious teenagers. And, as any teenager, the artists within a certain movement were maximalists. They saw the world around them changing and tried to change the world with their works. Artists today are more grown up and more cynical. Modern artists changed from masters to ideologists. Contemporary artist went all the way from masters to philosophers. Artists today are not telling the whole story any more, but rather trying to make people think and question. It became more about experience and conception than imagery itself.
