Less is more.
While more is not always a negative quality, excess can ruin a design. When creating something that has a lot to say and includes many ideas, sometimes as a designer you must include many images or words. Leaving out vital information will not improve a design. What "less is more" means is that any unnecessary information can be removed to heighten the impact of a visual. If you can leave it out, the focus of the viewer can be dedicated to what is important.
Specifically in graphic design i believe minimalism can strongly help a design. Countless companies have found the benefits of using extremely simple designs as logos. Customers can recognize the symbols quickly with no explanation or use of words. Large companies like McDonald's, Nike, and Apple use minimalism to their advantage. Any added graphics to these classic logos would strongly take away from the simple, easy way they relate consumers to a brand.
Although there is a place for intricate designs, flourish, and complexity in todays market a straight forward and easily absorbed design can reach audiences effectively.
