Differences between Graphic Design and Fine arts

I am honestly not one hundred percent sure what the differences are between graphic design and fine art. I have a vague understanding of the two. In my opinion fine art is more of a personal expressionistic type of thing, something you do in your way with no direction or rules of guidance about how it should be. Graphic design seems more guided a way of communicating, where you are givin guidelines from someone telling you what and how they want something. Although I am not quite sure of the details it is obvious to me that there is a large difference between the two. Fine art is more free expression and graphic design is more for a purpose set forth in advance.
