Discuss the Role of Light in Gothic Art and Architecture

The role of light in Gothic Art and Architecture was very important. With new innovations in the architecture of the time, such as the flying buttresses, cathedrals were being built on a much grander scale. Windows were very important in order to light the buildings. In order to make the windows more artistic, the artists used stained glass windows. The stained glass gave the buildings a much more blissful feel. Artists knew that the lighting of the buildings would create different moods for the patrons. The stained glass made the cathedrals have a more heavenly feel. They also used the stained glass and the designs of the windows to create art in itself. The structure of the windows were so beautiful that just looking at them, you felt the presence of God in the cathedrals.
