Romanticism

In between the late 18Th century and the mid 19Th century the Romanticism movement in art broke loose in conflict with the Enlightenment. Romanticism started as an intellect and artistic movement that valued the freedom of thinking for ones self. Romanticism brought emotion, individualism, and imagination to artists and their artwork. Unlike that of Neoclassicism art which is more calm and restrained in feeling. Since they were rebelling against the old ways of the Enlightenment people were attracted to the exotic and erotic. Romanticism has a highly imaginative and subjective approach, emotional intensity, and a dream-like form of style. Artists were interested in their inner struggles and emotions which they expressed in their paintings by using bright and bold colors. They had an attraction with nature with its wild and mysterious qualities. As well as the exotic, melancholy and dramatic subjects that were likely to bring out passion or a sensational feeling.
